Kenn Harper – Speaker 1:30 PM Saturday

A discussion of Eskimo language material from Greenland, Labrador and Canada, in all orthographies.

Kenn Kenn Harper is a Canadian writer, historian and former businessman. This talk will focus on his years as a collector specializing in Eskimo languages, especially from Canada, Labrador, and Greenland, using the term Eskimo instead of the Canadian terms“Inuktitut” and “Inuktut” to encompass the breadth of his collection. Harper will discuss his oldest items from pre-colonialization, through mission history and into the development of Syllabic and Roman orthographies. He will share his most treasured items and discuss the most elusive items on his collecting “wish list”.

John Metcalf – Speaker 2:30 PM Saturday

Adventures in the Book Trade

Why do first editions matter? Join John as he recounts the journey of answering this question, when at 18, and quite by accident, an aged book seller ‘adopted’ him into the world of books. England of the late 1950’s held a romantic flare, and Bernard Halliday – his mentor and guide – was as eccentric as they came. Facinating and charming, he taught John the light and dark side of commerce and the deep and generous relationships that flourish over a shared love of books.

Dan Calinescu – Speaker 11:30 AM Sunday

What about Dickens?

Dickens’ prolific writings and penchant for anticipation made him the most popular author of the Victorian era. Navigating the plethora of editions and series can become a collectors delight or greatest challenge. Learn how to identify a first edition Dickens, recognize what is truly collectible, and why one 181 year-old copy of a Christmas Carol is worth a few hundred dollars where another is worth hundreds of thousands.

Dave Chandler – Speaker 1:30 PM Sunday

The Art of Maps

Having been fascinated by maps at an early age, they eventually became Dave Chandler’s life-long obsession. He incorporated them into his teaching career and then turned his passion into a business of collecting, promoting and selling antique maps. His presentation will concentrate on the art of cartography, proving that imagination is needed for any expression of the human mind.
